The use of metals, particularly steel, has been a driving force behind industrialization. As of April 2022, India was the world's second-largest producer of crude steel, with an output of 10.14 MT. The Indian steel industry is classified into three categories and has contributed significantly to India's manufacturing output due to the domestic availability of raw materials such as iron ore and cost-effective labour. The industry is modern, with state-of-the-art steel mills that strive for continuous modernisation and up-gradation to higher energy efficiency levels.
